Leeds cosmetic dentists offer a wide choice of treatments.

If you thought that dental clinics were just about extractions and fillings, you might be surprised to discover what a local dentist can offer you. The following treatments are just a small selection of possible procedures. Please contact your Leeds dentist to enquire about the full range of cosmetic procedures they offer.

Dental Implants
Ever increasing in popularity, dental implants are a great way to replace lost teeth. Rather than the standard option of dentures, which may be uncomfortable, a dental implant consists of a titanium root which is inserted into the jawbone. This will then bond with the bone to provide a strong base. A crown is then fitted on top of this leaving, once the implant has settled in, a very strong tooth which should last around fifteen years or more if looked after.

Invisible Braces
Invisible braces, or clear braces, perform the same function as the traditional metal brace; with the advantage of being much less visible when the user smiles for example. They are effective in correcting the positioning of teeth or closing gaps between them. They are also very comfortable to wear and far easier to clean than the traditional metal brace, and you won't have to resist the temptation to smile when the moment arises.

Hollywood Smile
The Hollywood smile is acknowledged as the perfect smile makeover and as you might expect, stems from the super white and straight teeth that are often shown in magazines as the paparazzi snaps the latest superstar. The treatment is usually a combination of some or all of the following: crowns, veneers, orthodontics and tooth whitening. With the Hollywood smile, there will be no need to self consciously keep your mouth closed the next time your photograph is taken.

Tooth Coloured Fillings
The standard filling for several years has been the amalgam filling, a mixture of metals which provide for strong teeth. However, there is little denying that these can be unsightly. Thankfully, tooth coloured fillings, often made from glass particles, resin and a setting ingredient are available. These can be made to match the colour of the individual's teeth. They are best used on the more visible front teeth as amalgam provides a stronger material for the back teeth where we do most of our chewing and grinding.

Gum Contouring
If you have a 'gummy smile' one in which the gum has overgrown the teeth; your experienced dentist can now correct this by gum contouring. This involves a local anaesthetic being administered and a laser then used to trim the excess gum, reshaping them to look natural. As the laser also seals the blood vessels, the recovery time is very short, with minimal discomfort to the patient.

Crowns are a tooth shaped cap which is placed over a tooth to strengthen and improve the look of a tooth. This helps to prevent any future decay or wearing away of the tooth. They are usually made from porcelain or ceramic and a good quality crown should last between ten and fifteen years if cared for well.

It is not unusual for a patient to be nervous when having dental treatment. For some people however, this goes beyond what may be considered rational. Unfortunately, this often leads to people not maintaining their usual check ups and treatment, leaving them with vulnerable teeth which may need more serious treatment later on, instead of the small procedure that may have been needed initially. Many dentists now offer sedation either by gas, medication or intravenously. This will leave the patient relaxed but conscious. Not all dentists offer this, so please contact your Leeds dentist to enquire about this.
